Careers in Local Government
A career with the local council is one that is varied, interesting and touches almost all areas of life - more so now than at any other time, with many local authorities having ever-increasing responsibilities in areas such as public health and wellbeing.
There are many reasons to embark on a career in local government below are just a few:
- The visible reasons. For parks maintenance and refuse collection, for planning and environmental health. For doing the stuff that most people think is the be all and end all of the local council.
- The serious reasons. For protecting children who need looking after. For supporting the elderly. For standards in housing. For championing employability. For community cohesion.
- The compassion. For working alongside and supporting the voluntary and community sector to stand in the gap and protect the weakest, the vulnerable and the hard to reach.
- The diversity. The way different local communities mean that we're not all the same. And yet we're all seeking similar things.
Not only is a career in local government varied it is also one that can transfer across local authorities.
