We know that to provide the highest-quality service to the community, we need to take care of our staff and so we offer a range of flexible and family- friendly working arrangements to the majority of our employees.
These initiatives are aimed at creating a positive working environment enabling employees to work to their full potential and achieve a healthy work/life balance.
Local Government Pension Scheme
The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) is a nationwide, career average pension scheme and is a valuable part of the pay and reward package for employees working in local government. The LGPS gives you:
- Secure benefits - the scheme provides you with a future income, independent of share prices and stock market fluctuations.
- Tax-efficient savings and lower National Insurance contributions for most people under State Pension Age.
- Financial security for your family, with immediate life cover and a pension for your spouse, civil partner or eligible cohabiting partner and eligible children in the event of your death in service.
- And your employer pays in too - the scheme is provided by your employer who meets the balance of the cost of providing your benefits in the LGPS
For information on the scheme refer to the Local Government Pension Scheme website. Local Government Pension Scheme
Our pension scheme is administered by the West Yorkshire Pension Fund
Hours of Work and Flexible Working Arrangements
The working arrangements that we offer are intended to allow you and your manager to best match your personal needs with the needs of the organisation. We offer various working arrangements ranging from full time working to part time working, term time only contracts, home-working, compressed working hours or job sharing.
To enable you to find a positive balance between your work and home life we also operate a discretionary flexible working hours scheme that many staff are eligible to participate in. The 'flexi-time' scheme enables employees to start and finish the working day at times which best suit service delivery, client expectations and, subject to the needs of the service, the individual.
Annual Leave and Other Leave
Annual leave entitlement runs from the date of joining and is based on length of service ranging from 29 days to a maximum of 31 days (for part- time workers this will be worked out pro-rata) in addition to 8 days statutory bank holiday entitlement.
We understand that there are instances when employees may need to take time off to deal with family or domestic crises and to help to support them we have developed a suite of Family Leave policies including Special Leave and Bereavement, and Compassionate Leave. Depending on the circumstances, and with agreement from the line manager, the Family Leave policies provide the opportunity for employees to be granted up to a maximum of 7 days paid and 20 days unpaid leave.
Our Family Leave policies can be found at the bottom of this page.
Health and Well Being
We take the health of our employees seriously and among other pro-active measures, have an Occupational Health Service whose work is focussed on promoting well being, advising on reducing the impact of work on health and offering free information programmes to eligible staff. We also provide a free and confidential staff counselling service. In addition to statutory sick pay, our occupational sick pay scheme is based on length of service and provides a maximum of four months full pay followed by four months half pay.
Salary Sacrifice Schemes
Our Salary Sacrifice Schemes covers Childcare Vouchers and the opportunity for employees to buy up to 5 days extra annual leave on top of their usual holiday entitlement, subject to approval.
Assisted Vehicle Purchase Scheme
Our Assisted Vehicle Purchase Scheme provides loans to cover the purchase of cars, motorbikes, electric bikes and bicycles. The scheme is open to all staff to apply. Full details of the scheme can be found in our Assisted Vehicle Purchase Scheme Pollicy.
